The hair
cycle
Hair growth and the cyclic activity of the hair follicle are
controlled by a biological clock. The hair cycle starts with the
three-six
year Anagen Phase (growing phase), moves on to the
one-two week Catagen Phase (involving
phase) and ends with the two-four month Telogen Phase, where the
hair is in the resting stage before it sheds.
Causes for hair loss
The hair growth is influenced by numerous factors such as
genetic dominance and hormone messages. Androgenetic alopecia, the major
cause of hair loss, is the scientific term for the genetic predisposition in men
and women for pattern baldness or pattern hair loss. Androgenetic alopecia
begins in men in the early 20’s and in women mostly with menopause. It
generally
starts slowly and becomes progressively worse over time. Treatment is
indicated with the first signs of hair loss as long as the hair follicles are
still functional.
Research and development activities
Our studies focus on determining the mechanism of action of
locally applied Melatonin
on hair proliferation
in the hair follicle and on optimizing
the formulation for treating
hair loss and hair thinning. We have promising results and continue
our research in preclinical and clinical studies.
